Salary: Negotiable, depending on experience, skills and capability.

About the Role:

Aptium Assist is looking for an External Auditor to support one of our Australian clients. This opportunity is suitable for someone who is genuinely interested in building a career in external audit. Extensive audit experience is not essential; the client is prepared to provide training and ongoing coaching to help the successful candidate develop their technical audit skills and progressively take on greater responsibility.

Strong English communication is essential for this role, as you will work closely with Australian- based Audit Managers/Partners and communicate through email, reports, Microsoft Teams and day-to-day discussions.

Key Responsibilities

The role will follow a staged approach, with responsibilities expanding as the successful
candidate develops their audit knowledge and capability.

Initially, you will be responsible for:

  • Roll forward prior-year audit workpapers using Excel and Word.
  • Complete audit planning documents with guidance and coaching.
  • Prepare draft financial statements and lead schedules using clients’ trial balances.
  • Assist the administration team in preparing audit information requests for clients.
  • Assist in collating and referencing client documentation.

As your experience and capability develop, the role will expand to include:

  • Complete audit workpapers for in-house audits.
  • Perform audit fieldwork and prepare referenced supporting documentation for review by Australian-based Audit Managers and Partners.
  • Collaborate with the local audit team on larger audit engagements as required.
  • Provide basic insights, audit observations, and recommendations on internal controls for Audit Management Letters.

Skills & Experience

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Business Accountant supporting Australian businesses or clients.
  • Genuine interest in external audit and a strong desire to develop a long-term career in auditing.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written, with confidence in communicating with Australian-based stakeholders.
  • A relevant degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and develop through structured training and coaching.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet reporting deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Desirable, but not essential:

  • Previous experience in external audit, accounting, financial reporting, or assurance work.
  • Familiarity with Australian Accounting Standards (AASB) and/or Australian Auditing Standards (ASA).
  • Experience working with Not-for-Profit (NFP) clients, including organisations registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
  • Understanding of internal controls across areas such as payments and procurement, payroll, revenue recognition, debtors, governance, policies, and basic IT controls.

Software & Systems

  • Microsoft OneDrive for document sharing, templates, and client information requests.
  • PDF editing tools and Microsoft Excel for preparing electronic audit workpapers.
  • Accounting software such as Xero and MYOB.
  • Microsoft Teams for communication and collaboration with Australian-based Audit Managers and Partners.
  • Client document management and audit systems, with training provided where required.
